I quit coffee.
Yes. To you coffee drinkers out there (if you're even still reading) I'm sorry... I'm not part of the cool club any longer.
See, it's like this. I was addicted. Seriously addicted. I drank 5-6 cups of black coffee every morning. I used to think that a day without coffee was like a day without sunshine.
5-6 cups of straight, black coffee. That can't be normal for a 20-year-old to do that.
We had our church conference in June. I started my mornings as usual, with my many cups of coffee. Between our morning services we had a coffee break. Add one more cup to my normal intake.
After our evening services we have "snacks" (which, at my church, is a totally awesome meal) and of course, coffee. Enter 2 more cups for me. All that caffeine made it hard for me to sleep. So I had to counter it with sleeping pills. Smart, aye? Um, no.
At this point, my health-nut friend had me convinced that my stomach lining was surely see-through by now.
So one morning, I woke up and thought to myself "I'm not that addicted. I can quit." So I did.
Cold turkey.
Drank zero coffee.
Ouch. That's all I can say. I know what the meth-heads feel like now. It's painful. Very, very painful. I was sad. I missed coffee, and craved it terribly.
It was a Thursday that I quit, and I remember on Saturday afternoon I curled up in a ball on my bed and almost started crying.
One word folks: Pathetic.
Thankfully, I'm over it now. I don't crave it like I used to, and I can function just fine without it.
Three cheers for me!!

Ok, first of all, that's normal in my house. And by this I mean my 16-year-old sister polishes off a pot before work, before I even wake up. I think it's a Finnish thing.
Secondly, I could tell all kinds of reasons why coffee is good for you, if you care to know... I did a research paper on it. =D
Third, this really isn't about that Starbucks thing, right? ;)
Oh, I did that two pots of coffee plus sleeping pills during every midterm or finals week. I'm pretty sure that is legitimately not good for you. Good luck. Will you fall off the wagon when I come visit? Please?
Got addictions?
Come to RU on Friday nights! We can help with even coffee addicts :)
Good for you for giving it up. The stuff is nasty anyway (in my opinion).
Teri W
sucks little girl, I am almost 71 and my 4 cups per day has not killed me yet, tomorrow is another day.
So does this mean I'm not allowed to drink coffee in the presence of your blog??
Wow! I can't imagine. It's what gets me out of bed, knowing I'm going to get my half a cup. But that's all I can do. I can't imagine 5 or 6! Good for you!!
Good for you, Mel. I did the same thing a few years ago when I was trying to figure out what was making me so sick - cold turkey. And, like you, I was an addict. So even when I discovered that it was not coffee making me sick, I decided it was good for me to quit it anyway. I now have only one cup a day (decaf or 1/2 caf), if I want it. But I can go without because it doesn't control me anymore. Kudos to you, sister! Wokka chika!
good for you! I seriously cut back on caffeine soda with the same kinda speedbumps you had. but once its out of your system its not so bad.
Just so you dont feel so strange, my husband drinks 2-3 POTS of coffee a day. His flight surgeon recommended he cut back but last I asked him he was still up to 2 1/2.
Good for you! I always said that if I never start, I'll never depend on it for energy, and it's so true! I never drink coffee (don't like it much) and have so much energy. I wake up at 5:10 am every morning, go running, work a full day, come home, make dinner, and hang out with my guy before going to bed. I also sleep really well at night!
I think you'll like the new change once you get used to it. Oh, and I'm sure your wallet will, too...=)
sum peeple thinks coffee efex yur abilitees two due stuf. i dont thinks sew. i drink alot and it dusnt efect me atal.
Your mom is funny. :)
And... I think I'm gonna give coffee up in preparation for this trip. There seems to be a dearth of grounds in places Other Than The Northwest. Pray for me.
very bold of you! congrats!
Good for you Mel! I drink one cup each morning, and usually it's the half de-caf and half caf. I remember only too well the terrible headache I got when I quit drinking so much coffee a few years ago. Not good!
What...? She asked in a faint voice....
No more coffee????
I'm with Debbie on this one...
